No, not an issue with the PHP - I was responding to "AJAX not being cross site is annoying"
MaxMouse
Really? i thought that would only be important if the user had some kind of control over where the XML came from, if you hard code it (As in a PHP file) wouldn't that eliminate XSS attacks?
Domuk
Yes, but very, very necessary. AJAX requests run in the context of the browser, there'd be no security if it was cross-domain .
MaxMouse
AJAX not being cross site is annoying, all other scripts can be used in that way, having to resort to PHP to patch it is a shame.

Well it looks like my article has been delayed because of my shifting to a new school called The Westminster School, and it has a new syllabus (Cambridge IGCSE) instead of my previous school's syllabus (Edexcel GCE) - sure, the new syllabus is slightly easier but still, it takes a while to get used to a new school.

The first day of school was fun I suppose, made a few friends and all that but heck - the school diary is more like a student instruction manual for boot camp rather than a journal to record the daily homework in :|

Progress on my article about setting up a LAMPP server on Ubuntu with zPanel and Zantastico is slow - but it will come out eventually. I'd say about 1/3 of it is done so far - I'm taking as much of my free time as possible in writing this article in order to ensure excellent quality so that I have a good first impression - seems this article is gonna be a little bit big ;)

Time really needs to be managed well in the coming days as today was hectic as per the title (Go figure :P ) I need to make out time for homework, writing up an article, study, working on my linux distribution, a little bit of gaming, and God knows what else.

Just pray that I last until the weekend cause at the time I'm writing it's not seeming likely when my Mom's yelling at me X| (and SHE took up most of my time with measuring up for a stupid school uniform and she blames me for that.)

I watched a bit of CNN Pipeline today of the live broadcast of 9/11, 2001. Quite fascinating looking back at five years - may God help the world cause we sure as heck do need a lot of help.

I'd write more - but I really need to get back to, in Guybrush Threepwood's words: "pressing issues" xP

Cya people, and look out for my article soon!

Hey - I'm Aamir, 16.75 years old, I'm a big time Ubuntu fan, I've created my own Linux distro, and I love open source. I can be found at the Ubuntu support chatroom sometimes at freenode, and I'm really looking forward to making contributions to Osix - I really love the concept and the site's deadeasy design.
I can solve a Rubik's cube in under five minutes, a sudoku cube in under 10, and within a day or two I'll be posting articles, with my first one being how to set up a good LAMPP server on Ubuntu with zPanel and Zantastico.

I love it here! :D

Geek Challenges

I'm designing a new level called Primary Colours, its based on a 15x15 square containing blocks of primary colours (r,g,b) with a function performed on them.

Its not amazingly hard (i'd say Medium difficulty) but it is a bit of a pain in the ass to code a solution for (Useage of arrays, hex, binary and MD5)

I'll have submitted it next week some time, just so i can check my answers etc... heh i hope its accepted. If it goes down well i'll write a cube version which should be harder :)

Anyhow, the challenge has been submitted, its slightly different and the answer comes in the form of a double MD5 Checksum to avoid rainbow tables, i think its quite nice and would give good practice for using arrays, loops, different data types, spacial awareness and MD5 as i said i don't think its really hard but i designed it so it wouldn't seem hard to me.

If its accepted i'd appreciate comments :)

GR5
by MaxMouse on Sun 3rd Sep 11am
Just completed Geek Reverser 5, im really pleased with myself as the normal challanges are one thing, reversing is a completely different art. I was convinced i couldn't do it, but after looking at the code a very long time i realised i was starting to understand what was happening, its a strange feeling when you realise you're learning something that you thought you never could.

I'm also really impressed with the level design especially the way the serial is authenticated, the amount of valid serials i came up with was quite disturbing though and i thought it would take a lifetime to check them all!

Onwards and Upwards!

Recently i updated my site, i have no idea why i have it because i don't really do anything with it, currently my idea for it is simply storage, personal blog and the running of some scripts. I used to use it as a platform for some software i coded for the business i work (the software would request the current build number from the website, if it was newer the software would download the newer version and replace itself with it) but since they introduced SAP my simple application has understandably become redundant (The people who used my app still swear by it though, which im happy about)

Long and the short of it is, i have hosting and no idea what to do with it...

Any *doable* ideas?

It is possible to restore infected files from the vault to the 'computer' using the option 'Restore File As'.

So I restored as 'blah.xyz' the wmf file AVG found the other day and I put it on the desktop.

My surprise was to discover that AVG restored the file as 'blah.xyz.wmf'...

Nice joke AVG, thank you.

I don't think the Reverse thinking challange should actually be in the "Challange" Section, im not too sure what the other challanges above it are but none seem "Reverse" oriented. you only have to look at the drop off in completion.

8 : Reverse Thinking
173 users have passed this level.

7 : The Skyline
373 users have passed this level.

Now i found Skyline hard, fair enough its supposed to be, i dunno... Reverse Thinking just seems a bit of a bastard (Yes i know, i know its probably there for that, doesn't stop it seeming "Mis-Placed")

You're all officialy nasty nasty people.

Anyway I'm thinking of writing a few articles, maybe a few Visual Basic ones, anyone have any ideas?

I thought it was a typo at first, but you write it everywhere: We say "challenge".

And what does "reverse" mean?
Assembly is just putting numbers in small boxes and see what different combinations of boxes do.

You should be able to do that.

Hint: On a piece of paper write down thoroughly each register and each memory address and the values they contain after each step.

It's going to be time consuming, but you cannot miss what's happening in the program like that. It's a step necessary when you don't understand a program.

yeah i guess that reversing one was added in before we had the actual reverse challenges. although i agree with sefo, reversing often seems like its going to be impossible, but if you just watch what is going on, and read a few of the tutorials on here - it should be a walk in the park

I have not been around OSIX much in recent months. Unfortunately, there is just a lot going on in my life recently.

On top of the list is this large project at work. It\\\\\\\'s part of a 3-5 year plan to distribute notebook computers to faculty and staff at the private school that I work. In addition to this, we are installing ceiling mounted projector systems with connectivity available for teachers on wall boxes: VGA, RCA, USB and 3.5mm audio for the notebooks.

Funding is very limited as we are relying on grants from non-profit institutions, but I\\\\\\\'m pretty frugal and we managed to get it done, we did go a little over, but when it came down to it we had to spend the money to finish the project. We got some good deals through CDW, and we bought around 20.

For the notebooks, we bought the new HP nc6400. We wanted really cutting edge stuff, at least relative to what the teachers have now. Our vision is that learning can become more student centered and projects could go beyond PowerPoint into more multimedia oriented projects. In my opinion, PowerPoint has outlived it\\\\\\\'s usefulness with all that\\\\\\\'s available in raw power and connectivity.

These nc6400 sports a 2 GHz version of the new Core Duo. I am an AMD man myself, but I couldn\\\\\\\'t find a major OEM offering dual core mobile chips. I saw some Turion\\\\\\\'s, but they were single core and the 64-bit is worthless with XP. I have to use Windows: the 64-bit version of XP sucks from what I hear, and I don\\\\\\\'t want to have to upgrade to Vista to get the full capabilities of the processor. I hope to never have to upgrade to Vista. Hopefully, I\\\\\\\'ll be gone by the time management makes that request.

We decided we needed such power because we wanted it to be able to handle everything. So far, from my experience with them, they can handle almost anything, but then again I haven\\\\\\\'t been able to push them to the max. That\\\\\\\'s up to the teachers. I probably won\\\\\\\'t be getting one of these until around Christmas, but it will be one hell of a present.

Probably one of the coolest things on the laptop is the fingerprint reader. This is my first time seeing or experimenting with these things. I don\\\'t know how well I trust them with security. I mean you leave your fingerprints just about everywhere, and there are a few methods of reproducing them. It\\\'s pretty reliable, sometimes it asks for you to can your finger more than once if it doesn\\\'t get a good read, but it\\\'s pretty sensitive to how fast or slow you move your finger across it. Logging in and out of a computer has never been easier. I expect that the oils and dirt on your hands will eventually muck the reader up, but I\\\'m sure it\\\'s nothing a little rubbing alcohol can\\\'t fix.

The software interface for the reader is OEM software: HP ProtectTools Credential Manager, and I expect that\\\'s the options for these things at least for a while until OSes integrate it. It allows for a great deal of flexibility. You can link multiple network and machine accounts to multiple fingerprints. Included in the software is Single Sign-On functionality for any application that has a \\\"Password\\\" field. I tend to not use these features myself because I don\\\'t like to store my passwords anywhere but in my head. The software also handles the Smart Card reader that the nc6400 also has. So you can have pretty hassle free authentication across your computer experience. Given the encrypted fingerprint and your stored passwords aren\\\'t cracked, but I\\\'m just paranoid, but it definitely gives you more of an identity than a user account.

I went on and on about the laptops, but I\\\'ll fill you in on some more details at a later date.

Looks like we have a problem with escaping characters around here.
MaxMouse
2009-08-29 18:08:12
Escaping character problem? again?! lol! I've had a chance to play around with various biometric identification devices, including the laptop mounted finger print reader. It's worth noting that even complex fingerprint readers (at the time of writing) can easily be fooled by a slightly damp photo copy of the fingerprint, which as you say, we leave everywhere. As for storing passwords, i agree with you, i don't care if they use the latest in quantum cryptography I'm not using any piece of software to "Store them securely so that i don't have to remember them"
Domuk
2009-08-30 01:30:17
I'm sure I fixed this years ago. Maybe I just fixed it for articles and not blog posts, or maybe my changes got lost somewhere along the way.

I think it's down to the 'preview' - I'm guessing you hit 'preview' on the first six paragraphs once, and the whole article twice more. To fix we just need to remove an addslashes() on preview/error.
SAJChurchey
2009-08-30 17:40:30
MaxMouse:

I think my opinion on password storage has changed since then. When you consider how much time we spend typing in passwords coupled with how many different passwords a sysadmin might have to remember. SSO can be a blessing and productivity saver.

Even though the password is stored somehwere and can be retrieved. The latest in quantum cryptography might take a while to crack. So much so, it may even be easier just to bruteforce the password plaintext password, the more commonly known and understood method. Everybody should be changing their passwords regularly anyway, if they are that concerned with security.

I still don't use SSO, however, and I still use the head method, because cryptography protects your password from prying eyes, but it doesn't protect them from loss.

Domuk:

I haven't really seen much more of a problem with this, although I don't read or write in the blogs as much. There was a time when we had to correct these things on already existing items by running a script against the db. So this one may have not received the proper treatment.
MaxMouse
2009-08-30 19:23:42
Quantum cryptography is unbreakable, not because the algorithm is very secure but because of the nature of the universe, one of the laws that governs quantum mechanics states that just by viewing a quantum object you change it (See: Double slit experiment, youtube Dr.Quantum explains it best) So, if you where transmitting quantum encrypted data from one source to another and someone intercepted it and attempted to crack it, the data would become corrupted, if this happened a number of times (as in a brute force scenario) it would be obvious someone was attempting to "Mess" with the data.

I just used that as an extreme example, because i don't like the idea that certain (I don't mind about, say, facebook passwords etc) passwords are sitting stored anywhere, thinking about it i guess that thought is a little silly because remote sites/services authenticate passwords with hashes.. which can also be brute forced, so my passwords are all "sitting somewhere" even if only in hash form.

Congratulations! You can make a big donation to OSIX now :-) Just one thing, when they ask you for fees, just ask them to deduct them from the cash prize rather than making you pay them up front. This should help distinguish them from one of the many advance fee frauds out there; there should be no reason for a legitimate prize to be reduced in this way.

I installed torrentflux on my NSLU2 over the weekend - mainly because of some frustrations with rtorrent.

rtorrent is a superb client (in spite of rakshasa's relucatance to include encryption support inline with azureus and utorrent) and version 0.6.0 binary is available in ARM format for the NSLU2 via the debianslug apt-get install manager.

However ive been having a few bugs with it...

  • Torrents containing large files (dvd5 4gb ish) can fail during download with a stalloc memory error.

  • When several torrents are loaded and one finishes, the application sometimes closes down - in spite of the fact that other torrents are still running.

So, I thought I would give torrentflux a try and boy did i regret it. Its the type of application which makes you realise the limitations of the slug and why you really shouldnt try and overload it. Torrentflux uses a popular python script BitTornado bttornado.py to do the actual torrenting, but wraps it in a mysql/php/apache front end. I can imagine that on a reasonably powerful pc the combination is great - allowing you to queue and manage torrents remotely. But on the NSLU2 the python script fought with apache and mysql over memory and brought the entire slug to a grinding halt.

I've since gone back to rtorrent. I had a few goes at compiling in ARM on the slug, but my inexperience at these things - and a list of missing dependancies as long as your arm soon put me off. After a few tweaks to the rtorrent config file I managed to avoid one of my problems, but im still stuck over downloading some large torrents - but for the lovely performance on the NSLU2 its a sacrifice worth making (especially until i can get my paws on the 0.6.1 version compiled for NSLU2).

    Hi,

I installed torrentflux as well. Seems to work, oh oh celebrated to quickly, only admin screens works. Anything else results in very very long waiting...

Unfortunately i cannot get rtorrent of enhanced-ctorrent to work for me. I just cannot figure out how it is done. Can you please help me?

were you using a 100MHz NSLU2 or an unlocked 200MHz NSLU2 when you tried torrentflux? thanks for any further info.

I was using the vanilla nslu2 with no mods to it. torrentflux just really should not be attempted on a slug imo, especially when there are such supber solutions as rtorrent and ctorrent. If people are having difficulty getting either of those to work, drop me a mail at bb (at) osix.net and i'll send you my binaries. (note - for debianslug)

I am running Torrentflux under lighttpd and php5, and it works fine on my 266 Slug. The problem bb was having is that apache is too much of a monster to be run on the slug.

After a couple of weeks of online inactivity, I've decided to finish coding geek reverser level 10.
Hopefully it will be live and ready by the end of the week.

I've also been developing a pseudo point-and-click type of rgp. (ie no fancy graphics and animations, just cool riddles, challenges, character development, turn-based fights...etc.)
I have good ideas, I just need to find the courage and time to finish it...

This presumes that you have mt-daapd running on your NSLU2 and have port forwarding setup on your router to forward port 3689 onto your SLUG ip within your local LAN.

  • Download Rendezvous Proxy.
  • Install and start Rendevous Proxy.
  • Enter your home IP or dyndns address, port 3689 and a name for the service.
  • Restart ITunes locally, your home machine now appears as whatever service name you gave it (this changes when you connect to the mt-daapd server name in your config file).
  • Enjoy your tunes.

I think its sensible to ssh tunnel this or put a mt-daapd password on so that your slug isnt too exposed to the internet, which if i setup i'll post how to do.

big thanks to rj for helping me setup the tunneling to change my router config whilst doing this!

Phew this was a pain because I could not find the binaries for mt-daapd and arm so i had to scour the web for information and amazingly got it working, heres how...

    first get some required files
    apt-get install build-essential debhelper fakeroot libgdbm-dev libid3tag0-dev

then get the latest copy of the source - this was the first of my problems, as i needed 0.2.4 as its compatible with the latst version of itunes .. for reasons i'll illuminate later get the following two versions.

    unpack both
    tar zxvf mt-daapd-0.2.3.tar.gz ; tar zxvf mt-daapd-0.2.4.tar.gz

now the thing that screwed me up for a day, is that the changelog file in the latest release (0.2.4) was blowing up the dpkg-build process (it had wrong case, and contained some incompatible chars) so copy the version from 3 over 4. i added an extra made up entry for v4, not sure if its needed, but it didnt break anything
    cp mt-daapd-0.2.3/debian/changelog mt-daapd-0.2.4/debian

now configure - will take a few minutes
    ./configure

    finally build
    dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot

then move back a dir and install
    cd ..
    dpkg -i mt-daapd_0.2.4-1_arm.deb

now its all done, just edit the '/etc/mt-daapd.conf' file, point to your mp3s, you might need to chmod all the files in your mp3 dir to enable mt-daapd to see them 'chmod o+r -R /media/hd/Music/'. Now start the server '/etc/init.d/mt-daapd start' open itunes on your PC and bask in the glory that is music served up to your network via ITunes.

I found some useful urls along the way

I just recieved my Linksys NSLU2 Slug device in the post. Another ebay purchase thankfully worked out. I paid £45 for it, which is about £20 less than the shop price and it appears in excellent condition.

I'm going to start out with running the unslung firmware on it from www.nslu2-linux.org and if I get brave I might go for the Debian install.

Im going to use it immediately for

  • putting my 400gb usb hardisk on my home LAN
  • irssi + screen irc access
  • itunes mp3 streaming to lan
  • ssh / scp / tftp

    and longer term for

  • twonkyvision media streaming
  • http hosting
  • torrentflux

    BinScan

I created this tool to quickly identify modifications in the PE, use of a TLS callback and Alternate Data Streams.

-> Some modifications done in the PE structure of an executable can prevent debuggers or other tools to open the executable.
-> A TLS callback can be used to execute code at the moment you open the executable in a debugger. (very dangerous)
-> Listing all the streams is essential when you analyse a file.

The PE and TLS functions are very basic and might not work on heavily modified executables.
For example it will crash on Delphi executables that have an unused TLS table or on optimised PE files.
Those will be fixed in future versions.

When you scan for Alternate data Streams, you will always see a record:

    Stream: ::$DATA

This is the default stream, the files itself.
The name of alternate data stream will appear between ::
For example, in the screenshot below, one alternate stream is called 1337stream3.exe

You can then open that file (stream) in notepad for example using:

    c:>notepad c:\binscan\myfile.txt:1337stream3.exe

Note that Alternate Data Streams will be lost if you transfer them using a non NTFS support.
    (99% of mail servers)
But between you and me, it is possible to keep those streams if you compress the file with winrar :)

Click here to see a screenshot of the program.

Click here to download the program.

I'm in the process of cleaning and commenting the sources. They will be available later.

Now that the blog is online, I'll be able to share two or three tools I wrote.

The first one I'd like to share is WMF Creator. I already put a link in the comments of my article: Wmf Exploit but I thought it would look nicer here.

This tool will take care of calculating the header footer and adding some Meta functions. You just have to feed it with a binary file containing the code you want to execute. (a sample file that will open Regedit is included in the archive)

I first wanted to add more features to this tool but I will end the development to this version (1.1)

It works fine as a proof of concept and it's a good source for those who would like to see how easy it is to write in assembly for windows.

i guess this marks the advent of a new blogging module for the site

there used to be a mechanism for blogging, but it was well hidden (and mixed up with the shouts on the main page). i moved all the data over from non-shout related blogs (so these should just be the entries for people who actually found the old blog module).

i hope some people find it of use (although with some really advanced blogging sites available on the web - i dont have any illusions that it will be too popular!) and i'll try and keep using it myself so i'll be tempted to keep adding features like ..

    * rss export out
    * flikr foto linkage
    * aggregated by month view in right column
    * mechanism for linking 'friends'
    * better customisable look and feel
    * preview function

    BTW ..
If you have read the e-mail going around about the number "11" for the past few years, you will love David's response to it. I don't know who David is, but his response is funny!

    Original Letter:

    The date of the attack: 9/11 - 9 + 1 + 1 = 11.
    September 11th is the 254th day of the year: 2 + 5 + 4= 11.
After September 11th there are 111 days left to the end of the year.
    119 is the area code to Iraq/Iran. 1 + 1 + 9 = 11.
Twin Towers - standing side by side, looks like the number 11. The first plane to hit the towers was Flight 11.
    I Have More...State of New York -- The 11th State added to the Union, New York City - 11 Letters, Afghanistan - 11 Letters, The Pentagon - 11 Letters, Flight 11 - 92 on board - 9 + 2 = 11, Flight 77 - 65 on board - 6 + 5 = 11

    David's response:

Oh my God! How worried should I be? There are 11 letters in the name "David Pawson!" I'm going into hiding NOW. See you in a few weeks. Wait a sec ... just realized "YOU CAN'T HIDE" also has 11 letters! What am I gonna do? Help me!!! The terrorists are after me! ME! I can't believe it!

Oh Crap, there must be someplace on the planet Earth I could hide! But no ... "PLANET EARTH" has 11 letters, too!

Maybe Nostradamus can help me. But dare I trust him? There are 11 letters in "NOSTRADAMUS."

I know, the Red Cross can help. No they can't... 11 letters in "THE RED CROSS," can't trust them.

I would rely on self defense, but "SELF DEFENSE" has 11 letters in it too!

Can someone help? Anyone? If so, send me email. No, don't... "SEND ME EMAIL" has 11 letters...Will this never end? I'm going insane! "GOING INSANE???" Eleven letters! Nooooooooooo! I guess I'll die alone, even though "I'LL DIE ALONE" has 11 letters.....

Oh my God, I just realized that America is doomed! Our Independence Day is July 4th ... 7/4 ... 7+4=11

    Nitefox

PS. "IT'S BULLSHIT" has 11 letters also.

    I-D-10-T of the Day

I don't know. I might dedicate this blog to sharing the really stupid poo
I sometimes see at work. Those stories are usually funny, for me to read
later or send to a handful of my friends to look at. I'm sure people
wandering around this website will fall back on these blogs in a couple of
months. I think we should probably allow a user-customizable blog, maybe
allowing some uploaded stylesheets or something, maybe give the blogs a
    less boxy feel.

Anyway, I tend to ramble. I think that most people would describe me as
    "wordy."

So, faculty at the school at which I work have been talking about the
e-mail. This wouldn't be that much of the problem if they didn't phrase it
like we didn't do anything about it to the administration. Nobody said a
word to us. So somebody calls in saying their not getting their e-mail
    until the next day.

    Rant of the Week

After this week, if it's one thing that I do not understand, it's Palm Pilots, perhaps PDAs in general. For the life of me, I couldn't get this teacher's palm pilot to work for him. It wouldn't sync; the applications wouldn't run. All kinds of problems. I must have uninstalled and reinstalled software 1000 different ways using 1000 different scenarios, but nothing. According to Palm, you have to be a Power User or an Admin to use a Palm Pilot. What kind of crap is that? Why do you need administrative privledges to use this thing. All syncing is is moving files around, which means as far as the computer is concerned the Palm is just another storage device. Why do I need administrative access to use it?

I wasn't going to give this user any kind of privleges for good reason, and getting a Palm to work with a standard was a biatch, but after a week I finally got it, and I will never own a Palm Pilot myself. I might try another brand of PDA at one point or another.

    Hell.
'M back from wherever I was. We rode on down to Vegas for two days. The first day we were stuck looking for hotels-finally got a crappy one where they happily screwed us over (the pigs made us pay too much) and slept there for the day. The next day was the regular assortment of sight seeing and pointing, not that fun. The day before that I went to go see Star Wars starring my hot friend Anakin. Very nice. Luv the freakin' fight scenes. It had it's melodramatic parts which made me somewhat tired of the cheesy acting at some points but it was still great, better than the other two by far. Hell, it was late when we went to go see it. It was practically two in the morning when we got back.
Not like I care when I have coffee and all that jazz. Damn, I need some right now and I'm all out. Ttfn, gotta get some damn coffee.

I just drank about three cups of coffee in the last hour. Don't ask why, I just had this little itch for something to makme the blood flow, and its currently flowing too much-making my hands twitch. ;P
I watched the Matrix practically five times already in the same day (the first one, I like the concept of the second one but I don't really liek it that much, and the third one I want to shoot with a 'Bad Movie Die in Bad Movie Hell' gun.
Not like it would do anything but it would make me feel better in the end. Surfing the web for no good reason, hearin' a lot about Runescape. Now what the hell is Runescape and why is it so popular? Is it an online rpg? One of those two dimensional games that has catchy phrases every time you ascend to a level or funny characters who appease the obsessive disorders of geeks?
W/E, I'll stick to my FInal Fantasy rpgs as well as my Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic and NeverWinter Nights gaming. RPGs rule! No matter what the first shooter dorks say!
Though I was considering Unreal Tournament, the idea of running around and just shooting people has its rewards I suppose.
I got Megatokyo Volume 1! Shut up all you haters, I love Megatokyo. Piro's so cUt3.I also like Penny Arcade from time to time, the crude humor has it's points.
My caffeine is about to run out, I can feel it, need some pizza and some coke bottles to sustain the rush.
Tttfn, blogging is phunner than fun.

    oui!
I'm back, not like the masses care or anything but it matters to me-it really does.
Anyhoo, since changing tracks to magnet (yeah, 'm officially in the geek/nerd category now) i've been battling the forces of Bs with a stick and they've been pissing me off with their persistence. I just can't seem to get Geometry proofs-I mean why the hell do I need to prove a square is a square? If it says it's a square and if it looks like a square (and smells like a square) then it should be a square right? Why do I have to prove this? Give me some algebraic equations, i can do that in a heartbeat! Blast-give me half a sec.
    ....
Back again, anyway i've been booked, gotta find something that has to do with robotics. And archaeology, I've got a new thing for egyptology and ruined cities, doesn't that rock?
Oh-Stephen Hawking rules! I just picked the damn book up because it looked cool and now I understand the fundamentals of physics (though i'm not going to go all out and say i'm ready for the subject.) Hawking's as funny as science is gonna get, the man reminds me of Einstien himself minus the hair. Thinkgeek.com needs an 'I Luv Stephen Hawking's Books' babydoll t-shirt. (And accompanying hat of course.)
Finals week! So far so good, though the bit on Shakespeare was a bit iffy. I'm not sure about Geometry, should be easy if there's not any damn proofs.
I was thinking of emailing Hawking and tell him how inspired i am by his work, but that's a bit too...w/e, 'm not doing that. Need to study and read my duckies, ttfn.

    Christmas Break!

    THE BREAK HAS OFFICIALY BEGUN!!!
Finally, i have time to camp at OSIX and try to "vacuum" all the info i can on these 2 heavenly weeks.
Now it's time to get to real work, still having a freaky trouble the Growing Crystal Challenge - I've got the answer, but my calculator gives in a way that OSIX doesn't accept - Ex:2004e11 -Aargh!! and what really gets on my nerves is that I'm obliged to pass that challenge to have access to other ones, anyway I really pretend to work hard so that I can get to a more "competitive" stage.
A notice for all of u mathmaticheans (spelling problem)- Please make more articles, they are absolutely essentials for these kind of challenges.

/me threatening my computer/alter ego with virtual violence if i don't make this a quick blogging.

Aaarrgh! Get on the ball Macavity! Gotta get those brain cells running-

On the good side, i got all a's and i'm probably gonna get all a's for the first semester report card so the pressure is slowly being drained and I can have more free time to frolock and stay in my room deciding which parts i need to construct the ultimate box i'm saving up for.

'M reading up on Windows API now( why the hell does Microsoft make everything so difficult? All i wanna do is game), surfing aimlessly, reading a bit o' fic because i can, and later on i think some serious deeply involved mudding is in order.

Whew, i'm booked, how sad-i don't even have to leave my seat and heated room.

i deeply need some icons, my current wallpaper is from the explodingdog website, but it changes hourly, just a minute ago i had my favorite Megatokyo comic oup, and before that was a NASA photograph of the Andromeda.

and for today's theatrical's outside of the computer screen: nothing much, same ol' fun day i guess, i'm still getting use to the new campus and hopefully i'll find the computer lab. As of yet i've find the tech room (i swear i think i saw a couple fiber optics and just a disarray of discarded towers and i zoned out for a minute or two) but i know they have a lab somewhere in this joint.

    Just gotta find it.

Aarggh! I went over the blogging limit, back to work!!

Oh-and Frag Dolls rule the biz!

Starters off...i'm trying to get the gist of everything, i think i might be slower than suspected though.
Arrays and me don't seem to mix. i was doing fine, progs were alright until i got to reading the array part and then my brain fell apart.
Besides the deficiencies of my human brain (damn my species and their small heads!) i think i'm doing pretty well in the technical progress level-Unix info on a great level (even though i still haven't installed linux) html (perfecto), basic terms understanding (perfecto) understanding tcp/ip (getting to perfecto).
Hell, lucky tomorrow-i don't go back to the penitentiary (coyly referred to as highschool) so i can caffeinate myself into an overtime reading stupor and hopefully get past this array problem tomorrow...
And please...if anyone's still reading this blog, don't judge me on text.

    Tuesday: Pre-Calculus test

...what... the hell? When did we take all this? I just had a pre-calc test last week! If my life wasn't so strange in a rainbow-unicorn manner, it would have been a tragedy.

I'm not one for labels. I'm not a goth or a jock, nor am I a prep. In fact, I don't know what a prep is. I'm not saying those people who label themselves as such are wrong. I'm saying that it's not for me. I can go to a metal concert and not be a hardcore rocker. Yes, I know I mixed metal with hardcore, but damnit I'm too cool to check my facts. In fact, if I was to best describe myself, I'd be a Suess. That is, someone who's taste in clothing, music, and literature is beyond the imagination of the great Doctor himself. I have friends who have labels to go with their hobbies. Being the multitalented genius that I am, I have too many interests to give myself a label. If I did try, however, it would look something like: philomathesophiliterartismartiaprogramatheologist.

I hate naming, I can give a million names for one thing and no one will be happy, damnit if you want me to name something, don't tell me my names suck: I'm always right, you're not! What the hell i an "old school" name anyway? A name is a name!

Language is nice, I like languages, I'm strong in two and well on my way to the third, I mean human languages, not computer. Studying different languages in one family of languages is more fun because you can compre similar words, and get insight as to the workings of these languages. The most important thing about language, though is the following: You can say whatever the hell you want in an obscure languae and everyone will think you're cool.

That brings me to writing, I write, it's fun, I don't necessarily write well all the time, nor do I always pay attention to my grammar, for example, this is a run-on sentence. I guess that's because in my original language, I can go on for a page without a fullstop and get a full mark, damn I love Arabic. Fiction, I think, interests me the most, because it's not real. Although those teach yourself books are really appealing (even though they never work).

In conclusion, it doesn't really matter what language you speak, or what name you give something, "A rose by any other name would smell as sweet".

Taken from my Pre-Calculus textbook, my first reaction to this question on a quiz is "I wonder if it's too late to drop a course". Now I like math, I'm not any good at it but I like math, numbers, and that feeling you get after solving a seemingly impossible question. But this is pure evil. What kind of mentally disturbed teacher would plague students with questions like these? This is the kind of question that leaves us depressed and traumatized, forever scarred. It is with this question that I began my week, and now at its end I still have no answer. While most students think about friends, social events, and the like, I'm sitting here thinking "...so the FIRST bee will take 50 seconds...". Really, life is strange.

I've added a new article, it really made me think, my views are more than likely flawed, but that is okay... If it does nothing else it will stimulate some discussion on a topic that really needs to be discussed.

I'll get around to putting up revised class logs from some of the classes that I am doing on C++ at the moment *cough* okay so I probably won't get around to it, but it was a nice though while it lasted.

    Last night's dream:

In a computer game, fighting a war in an urban environment. I had a granade launcher with a telescopic sight. Killed quite a few people. Then hooked into a girl. We had to run to a log across a creek/river, as grannades where landing arround us. I ended up laying on top of her on the rather uncomfortable (narrow 'n' lumpy + hard) log. We had weedy vines arround us forming a sort of tent. Moment intrupted by the two of us needing to yell to somone who was seemingly about to be killed as he was surrounded by grannades. These 'grannades' where revealed as simply tape which had been placed there by William (DSP).

It's been a while since I've written in here. Just so little time these days and so little going on. Tonight MGALUG got their basic website up and running, and I'm glad to see us finally take that big step of getting our name out there on the web. Hopefully, it will be a central point of communication for MGALUG members to do great things for the Middle Georgia region (I'm from Georgia in the US if you didn't know).

Well I'm here. Allow a brief intro.

I used to be a fun loving kid that liked messing with 'puters, became reasonably proficient with basic and c (back in the late 80's early 90's) went to university and got a degree in Computer Science and waited for a few months for a job.
Three to be precise, during the period of time where people were still investing and the now out-dated fat-client/fat-server model was still predominant in most sectors of the industry. The web boom hit, flooding the market with .com startups lots of venture capital, soaring share prices, rocketing house prices, sinister inflation etc, the Twin Towers fell and the bubble bursts due to bad timing and poorly written and late delivered code.
    And now....?
Nothing...not so much as an electronic sausage....
We're doing well to have a job, and getting paid on time is a mere myth. This is not what engineering is about! The majority of the problem is the sense of self-preservation and locking knowledge away from your fellow workmates, so that you become the "elite". Those that are new to the company are often subject to the rigours of internal politics. And, if you don't play the game by their rules (which are never written down or explained), you are never given any information to actually assist you with your work.
The reason they gave you employment in the first place was because they have a brilliant business idea that they want to turn into software.

Never forget, that the primary reason that most of the .com companies went bust was not owing to lack of talent, lack of skill, lack of investment or lack of knowledge. It was and still is, the inability to play fairly, treat everyone more or less equally, and COMMUNICATE properly with designs, forethought and planning.

Speaking with a few years of experience behind me at various nominal levels within the industry with whatever fancy titles you wish to give them. I have never found it any different with any employer.
And what do they build their profits on?
    OPEN SOURCE technology.

The Open Source enthusiasts develop solid code in the open source world and how is it achieved? By talking, by sharing (resources and ideas) and by limiting (as much as is possible) the politics.

    Yes, I'm bitter...
    Yes, I'm jaded...
But I haven't given up yet! The open source arena is where some of the world's greatest innovators started their life in the industry. They love their job, and so do I. I would like to give something back to the community. Who knows?...It could be the start of something really beautiful and rekindle my faith in the industry.

I hope someone has similar ideas out there, if you do then drop me a line and we take it from there.
I'm looking to improve my raw and unpolished skills. My original career choice is stifling any and all good ideas that come from a love of software development. I need some release from this bondage.

I bought and installed a Liteon IDE 16x DVD-ROM player today. After initial configuration, new nVidia drivers to enable 3D acceleration under X, and some permissions tweaking, it works like a charm.

The most charming thing about the whole thing is VideoLan (http://www.videolan.org). Its an open source multimedia player (and server) that allows you to stream your media very easily and simply. I now have my desktop machine playing The Life of Brian DVD multicast throughout the LAN so that anyone who's online can connect, and watch the film at whatever stage its reached.

Its a really great piece of software, if anyone's interested :)

Finally passed Geek 6 today and became a geek forum mod. A nice surge in a very uneventful day. I have been waiting for the staff to give me feedback on those article policies, but nothing for the past two days. Overall, things seem to be inactive. I guess I will give it a couple more days.

    Well,

I am excited about my new Comp. Sci. project coming up. It will give me a chance to work on my open source project, JCalc. Hopefully, I can give it a good workover and turn in the new features and hopefully have a new release on the project very soon.
